Déjà  vécu

I’d never heard of déjà vécu before, but according to this article from the New York Times Magazine, it’s an especially intense and/or recurring version of déjà vu. Déjà vu (already seen) is an odd sensation of recognition for a situation that in fact is novel; people generally know that the feeling is inaccurate and that they haven’t really been there before. In déjà vécu (already experienced), people can’t tell that a situation is new; they believe they are reliving a familiar experience. (It got me started wondering about how we do tell the difference between a real memory and déjà vu, or between dreams and reality.) The article talks about memory in general and its relationship to consciousness, summarizes the theories about why déjà vu happens, and discusses what’s different about déjà vécu. I was struck by the description of déjà vu:

Occurring at seemingly random times, lasting from a few seconds to a few minutes, it often comes with a feeling of approaching premonition. Not only does the situation feel familiar, but a vision of the future also seems just beyond the searchlights of your conscious mind.

I hadn’t heard much about that feeling of being just on the verge of seeing the future, but I’ve felt it, and this seemed an uncommonly apt description of it. I have felt that if I could just remember a bit more, I’d know how things will turn out, or what will happen next. It’s an uncanny sensation—one of the stranger aspects of being thinking meat.

  1. wow-i have gone my whole life with this and never knew it by a the name deja vecu. iam happy i found this information.
i wanted to share that what i have gained from this deja-vecu a wonderful sense of faith…..the dream will happen wether we like it or not…afraid of hell or not we will it seems be witness

  2. I have had similar experiences relating to the definition above…as a kid…i would black out and start to hear voices…now…as i grow older…it gets stronger…i feel as if ive seen these things in dreams before…lately i have been experiencing dreams that i fear will come true

  3. just wanted to share that once i read about deja vecu it seemed an exact description of what i had been experienced. later i found out (the hard way) that i was epileptic and my spells had in fact been partial seizures and auras. i wonder what the connection is or if i had even been experiencing deja vecu–it certainly seemed that way based on what i read and how my spells felt.

  4. Since a year I experienced “Deja Vu/déjavecu” quite oftened…

For instance the same event happened again within a – one week to several months time frame….

Ex. In the street a family asking me how to reach the train station….the same
people (foreigners) asking me the same
question one week later at the same spot….

On the beach a kid asking his father why
was he reading a sex magazine…the next day at the same spot same people
same question at about the same time…

While watching TV the certitude of having
seen a movie never been programmed before…..it happened very oftened as well as for some books…

Sometimes I feel like living in a different time frame….not in the present rather in a near future ???

    Thank’s for your comments
